What is Krav Maga?

Krav Maga, Hebrew for contact combat, is an intuitive and effective self defence system developed by Imi Lichtenfeld. Imi was an accomplished boxer and gymnast who also competed at National and International level in wrestling. Being Jewish and living in Slovakia during the 1930’s he found his neighbourhood terrorised by anti-Semitic gangs. In order to defend against these attacks he teamed up with boxing and wrestling friends, but found that his skills from sport bore little correlation to the requirements of "street fighting”. His experiences led to him developing a set of principles and techniques for self defence that have become Krav Maga.
